Our Travel Policy

Our Mission

Cultural Expeditions promotes sustainable travel to areas that conserves the environment, respecting and benefiting local people. We believe that sustainable, responsible tourism is invaluable to developing the communities and preserving the environments of Peru. We provide informative, enjoyable expeditions while increasing the benefits for the local economies, host communities and environments of Peru. We have been operating since 1999.

We believe a traveler's experience is enhanced by proper site interpretation and provide extra experiences that allow
the traveler to get a better understanding of the cultures that built the site. Interpretation is a critical component of an authentic experience and we ensure that interpretations are accurate and current. We provide visitors with supplementary educational materials and opportunities so that travelers understand the site they are seeing is part of a larger context and that preserving the site is a step in preserving a larger cultural heritage.

Community

We promote the participation of the communities in which we operate by contracting local guides, drivers, etc. Always treating people with respect, observing their cultural traditions and avoiding patronising attitudes and encouraging our clients to do likewise. We inform our visitors through excellent local guides who can pass on local information and provide an insight into the host destination in a sensitive manner.

We are committed to sustaining the character and integrity of each place we visit—its environment, culture, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. In providing authentic travel experiences, we strive to support local economies in our choice of services.

Principals

Elvi Bjorkquist

Elvi graduated with a BFA in art, and art history, plus has two Master's Degrees in Religion and Art History. Her specialty is the Pre Colombian Peruvian cultures and the early Spanish Colonial contact period. Elvi has maintained her own business for 20 years, and also has an education in the tour operating business. She founded Cultural Expeditions Peru in 1999. Her travel experience is extensive, traveling to many places around the world such as: Turkey, Greece and Greek Isles, Egypt, Spain, Morocco, Europe, Scandinavia, Caribbean, Hawaii, USA, Canada, Central America, South America, and with lengthy stays in Central America and Germany where she lived for three years traveling most of the continent.

Wilbert Yañez

Wilbert has a Bachelor's Degree in Tourism from the National University of San Antonio de Abad, Cusco, Peru. Plus an additional Master's degree in Tourism. In 2007 he was awarded best tour guide in Peru by the Peruvian Ministry of Tourism. His course work included studies in history, archaeology, anthropology, sociology, art and folklore, along with instruction in the travel business. He is proficient in his native language of Spanish, as well as English and French. He is a licensed expedition leader and past president of the Official Guides of Tourism Association in Cusco. His passion for history combined with thirty years of experience in tour leadership and his scholarly knowledge gives him the ability to make history come alive. He has traveled extensively in many places around the world, motivated by his interest in archaeology and world history.
